I myself have lived in Mumbai for 2 years for my first job. I’m not a Bumbaiya. But during my stint I easily picked up the language. I used to stay in Vikroli. I received this book as a gift from my friend. The gift was for me to cherish my memories of Mumbai. But my memories are far from reality. Far from the dark side of the city I lived in. Its neither a travelogue nor a light read. Believe me after reading the novel, I don’t want to dwell in this city of crime.
There are bunch of movies which picturizes The real Mumbai, but once you read the book you would definitely appreciate author’ depiction of the city. Suketu talks about different issues, societies, its people and overall system that keeps it going. Here you would find details about the foundation of different underworld gangs, life of bar dancers, film makers, how systematic distribution of wada-pav is done and much more.
Maximum City is all about Bombay – a city that rocks…a city that never sleeps…city of restless insomniacs…city of ghosts!!! A nice read indeed.
